Abstract
The prediction for the width spread of slabs and strips after rolling is significant and essential for product quality in hot rolling. In the roughing mill, vertical rolling gives rise to the dog-bone shape at the edge of strip. And then the dog-bone shaped strip passes through the horizontal rolling. The width spread of the dog-bone shaped strip in horizontal rolling is important to make final width exactly. In tihis paper we investigate the validity of various mathematical models to predict width spread during rolling repeating vertical rolling and horizontal rolling in roughing mill with hot strip. The results of 3-D finite element (FE) simulations are compared with actual measurement values from manufacturing site and conventional models to confirm the prediction accuracy.
