- Abstract
- The propagation constant is extended and derived for lossy metamaterials in which epsilon'(r) < 0 and mu'(r) > 0 (ENG), epsilon'(r) > 0 and mu'(r) < 0 (MNG), and epsilon'(r) < 0 and mu'(r) < 0 (DNG). Regardless of the magnitudes of a epsilon ''(r) DPS mu ''(r). DPS materials are a RH medium and DNG materials are a LH medium. However, SNG materials become a RH medium when the sign of (epsilon'(r) x mu ''(r) + epsilon ''(r) x mu'(r)) is positive and a LH medium when the sign is negative. A new diagram is proposed to classify any lossy metamaterial into either RH or LH medium. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
