In a Spectrum between Self-Denial and Self-Assertion : A Reading of the Histories of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Twentieth-Century China

Abstract

본고의 목적은 영어권 학계의 성과를 중심으로 2000년대 이후 20세기 중국 과학사, 기술사, 의학사 분야의 연구를 정리하고 소개하는 데에 있다. 본고는 관련 주요 저작과 논점을 중화민국 시기(1949년 이전), 마오쩌둥 시기(1949-1976), 포스트 마오 시기(1978년 이후) 등 크게 세 시기로 나누어 종합적으로 정리하며, ‘마오주의 과학’ 및 ‘중국적인 것과 코스모폴리턴적 근대성 간의 관계성’이라는 두 개의 핵심 쟁점을 제시한다. 이와 같은 연구사 검토를 통해 본고는 다음과 같은 하나의 역사인식 혹은 ‘독법(讀法)’을 제안한다. 20세기 중국 과학사·기술사·의학사를 연구한다는 것은, 다양한 ‘중국인’ 행위자들이 각양각색의 전문지식과 실천들을 동원하여 적대적인 국제정세 속에서 부강한 민족국가 건설이라는 목표를 (혹은 그 이상의 무엇이나 그 대안을) 추구하는 가운데, 자기 부정(全盤西化 지향)과 자기 재생산(중국본질주의 지향)이라는 두 방향성 사이의 폭넓은 스펙트럼에서 ‘과학적’이고 ‘근대적’인 것과 ‘전통적’이고 ‘중국적’인 것을 나름대로 생산·구성하고 조화시키려 했던 인식론적, 존재론적 분투에 대한 역사학적 분석이자 재현이라고 할 수 있다.

This review essay aims to comprehensively and critically introduce the post-1990s Anglophone literature on the histories of science, technology, and medicine in twentieth-century China. Focusing on the two focal problems of what “Maoist science” was and how we understand the relationships between “Chineseness” and “cosmopolitan modernity,” it is divided into the three chronological sections of the Republican era (1912-1949), the Maoist period (1949-1976), and the post Mao years (1978-present). This essay concludes that the recent historiography of the histories of science, technology, and medicine in modern China tends to articulate how diverse historical actors tried to mobilize expertise and practices in pursuit of making China a strong and wealthy nation-state (or something beyond or alternative to it) in the contexts of colonialism, war, revolution, and the Cold War. I especially emphasize that we need to situate the historical actors’ epistemological and ontological struggles to (re)produce, construct, and come to terms with multiple, conflicting meanings of the “scientific”, “modern,” “traditional,” and “Chinese” in a wide spectrum between China’s self-denial (e.g. total Westernization (quan pan xi hua) and its self-assertion (e.g. Chinese essentialism).
