Abstract
There are several major issues in the field of deformable devices using ion gels. Humidity sensitivity, absence of design model and analysis of ionoelectric properties of ion gel in coplanar structure, and development of stretchable electrodes for ion gel-based sensor for long-term skin attachment. In this study, I designed an ionic temperature sensor independent of humidity and deformation. For humidity independence, a water-saturated ion gel was used in a coplanar electrode structure. We also analyzed monolayer ion gels and layered ion gels with coplanar electrode structures by impedance spectroscopy. We designed an equivalent circuit model for the layered ion gel by EIS analysis. In addition, we have developed a stretchable electrode that can be attached to the skin for a long time. The electrode has good adhesion to an ion gel that can be applied to an ion gel-based skin-attachable sensor. I fabricated humidity-independent and strain-independent ion temperature sensors. I suggest water saturation of hydrophobic ion gels for humidity independence. The water concentration of the ion gel was kept constant at 30% R.H. and 90% R.H. for 120 h and verified by computational studies and experiments. To obtain strain independence, we analyzed the ionic electrical properties of water-saturated bilayer ion gels using EIS analysis. We demonstrated humidity-independent and strain-independent skin ion temperature sensors by attaching them to the skin in humid conditions and conditions involving body movements. I introduced design factors such as electrode geometry, electrode morphology, and ion concentration. Based on the design factors, I proposed an equivalent circuit model for a multilayer ion gel with a coplanar electrode structure. This model can be used to predict the ionelectric properties of layered ion gels. Additionally, I offered the basic theoretical understanding for multi-stacking ion gel system. I fabricated stretchable PEG-DA electrodes for ion gel-based deformable devices. PEG-DA substrates can form very strong interconnections with acrylate-based ionic gels. These electrodes were patterned into stretchable serpentine structures that could structurally relieve mechanical stress. For application to the epidermal sensor that can be used for a long time, the PEG-DA electrode is designed to evaporate moisture from the skin to prevent skin irritation and deterioration of sensing performance. We demonstrated long-term use of ECG sensors and joint sensors with PEG-DA electrodes. Additionally, I apply PEG-DA electrode to stretchable interconnections for ion gel. I treated Au electrode with acrylate functional group using SAM treatment. Finally, I can fabricate stretchable interconnection for the stretchable ion gel sensor which is not damaged by hydrophobic precursors and solvents.
