Abstract
Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is a ubiquitous phytoplankton metabolie and the main precursor of dimethylsulfide (DMS) which is considered as one of climate-active gas in the oceans’s surface. In addition, it is a major source of nature flux of sulfur compound to the atmosphere. I participated two field trips to get seawater samples around Iceland in 2018 and 2019 and analyzed them to establish an empirical equation to predict DMSPt concentration. Data of 2019 shows higher chlorophyll-a and DMSPt concentration than 2018, but I found two complemented empirical equation for both of year at both region, such as “stratified” and “mixed” water column criteria by using several measured parameters about seawater. The two equations are 2nd order polynomials where the 2nd order terms have minus coefficients in log-scale. The complementary equation shows increased cover range of DMSPt as a function of chlorophyll-a. To validate the equation, I drew the DMSPt concentration distribution map which was predicted by using complemented equation and satellite chl-a data to compare with the interpolation of measured DMSPt map. The tendency was highly adjusted except at several regions. Furthermore, I predicted DMSPt concentration of several monthes by using the equations. By binding this result with the atmospheric DMS concentration we measured at Iceland, I can find the origination of wind trajectories which shows high DMS concentration. They traveled upon sea surface where it showed high DMSPt concentration and was located near at the measurement station. Simply connection between sea DMSP and atmospheric DMS does not show significant relationship. More accumulated data about various variables are required to discover the relationship between two variables Although the empirical equation was not correct perpectly, it is possible to develop the logic that not only a link between phytoplankton and DMSPt, but also a connection between atmospheric DMS and phytoplankton biomass can be set by estimating the empirical equation.
