Abstract

Max Planck believed that the highest goal of physics lay in the construction of a world picture that was not just useful but also unified, clear, and true. This belief helped him escape from the positivist influences from his early years and eventually led him to his famous solution to the problem of black-body radiation. Even though the quantum theory he initiated posed serious challenges to his worldview, Planck never gave up his ideal while enduring all the difficulties of his time.
