Abstract
(4-methoxyaniline (MeO-An), 4-methylthioaniline (MeS-An) and 4-(dimethylamino)aniline (Me2N-An)).
Carbon nanodots (CNDs), as one branch of fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, have been the subject of extensive research over the past decade due to low cost, biocompatibility, long-term stability, and reasonable photoluminescence. Among a variety of synthetic routes to CNDs reported thus far, the emulsion-templated method can afford highly luminescent and fairly monodisperse CNDs via carbonization of readily-available carbon sources (glucose, citric acid, polymers, etc.). This method is promising because any unpractical size-selection procedure, special equipment, and high-temperature heating can be excluded. Synthesized CNDs by this method, however, also have the absorption and emission spectra biased to the UV wavelength region, so their photoluminescence are confined to blue and limited up to green. There is still challenge such as obtaining visible long-wavelength photoluminescence of CNDs. To solve above problem, this thesis reports optical band gap tuning of CNDs using two methods; one is doping and the other is surface functionalization. It has been reported that the electronic structure of CNDs originates from their polyaromatic carbon domains, defective states, and surface states, presumably due to auxochromic effect. Doping can modulate electronic structure of polyaromatic carbon domains, because dopant atoms (such as nitrogen and/or sulfur) play a role in auxochrome of CNDs. Among various doping methods, doping nitrogen and/or sulfur into CNDs or other types of carbon nanostructures has been found to be very effective, so using ethylenediamine-N,N’-diacetic acid (EDDA) and 2,2’-(ethylenedithio)diacetic acid (ETDA) as sources of nitrogen and sulfur-doped CNDs, respectively. Doping would lead to significant changes in the electronic structure of CNDs, and give rise to broad light absorption and strong PL in a long-wavelength visible light region. Surface state is one of the main factors in electronic structure of CNDs. The term of surface state is generally defined as electronic states found at the surface. CNDs possess a variety of surface functional groups, defects, and so on in their surface, so different surface functional groups would lead to change of electronic states. Surface functionalized CNDs is synthesized by using various para-substituted anilines; 4-methoxyaniline (MeO-An), 4-methylthioaniline (MeS-An) and 4-(dimethylamino)aniline (Me2N-An). This surface functionalization would give rise to substantial changes in the photoluminescence, showing yellow-to-red photoluminescent light of very narrow spectral widths. For practical use, the CNDs is finally utilized in light emitting devices including PhLED and OLED. The CNDs produces bright visible light under UV illumination so that would be worth utilizing in phosphor applications. In case of doped CNDs, white light is produced by their various electronic state originated from dopant atoms and defect site, however, surface functionalized CNDs films produces green, yellow, orange and red light because of their uniformity of surface state. To show the effects of doping on their electronic structure and related electroluminescence, light-emitting diodes with CNDs (CNDs-LEDs) are fabricated. Doped CNDs-LEDs exhibits broad, panchromatic electroluminescence ranging from 400 to 700 nm to produce bright white light consistent with PhLED results.
