A Supplier Selection Approach to Enable Agile Supply Chains

Abstract

Turbulent and volatile markets are making product life cycles shorten. Accordingly, every company needs its supply chain to be agile. However, why have we not witnessed such an agile supply chain? One of the problems is there is a lack of adaptive supply chain assembly and configuration mechanism. This research seeks fill this gap by proposing a new approach to suppler selection. The approach consists of three steps: 1) identify capable suppliers, 2) select a supplier and assess its agility, and 3) configure business processes for agile supply chain operation. The contributions of the new approach are summarized as follows: 1) New evaluation criteria are proposed. Specifically, both manufacturing capability and non-manufacturing capability are evaluated. 2) Measurable evaluation indicators are proposed. Indicators related to agility, the magnitude of bullwhip effect and inventory cost are integrated in the methodology. 3) New evaluation methodologies are proposed. These include a methodology to dynamically select evaluation indicators based on buyer’s requirements and a quantitative methodology for evaluating impacts of multiple indicator values. Together, these contributions would enable companies to develop agile supply chain capabilities.

소비자의 요구가 급변하고 다양해지는 것과 동시에 자연재해 및 협업기업의 공급 중단 등 외부 환경 요소가 늘어나면서, 최근의 비즈니스 환경은 격동의 시기를 겪고 있다. 이로 인해 제품의 개발 주기는 짧아지고, 고려해야 할 외부 환경 요소가 늘어나게 되었다. 따라서, 모든 기업들은 민첩한 공급망을 갖기 위해 노력을 경주하게 되었다. 하지만, 우리는 실제로 민첩한 공급망을 가진 기업을 찾기 힘들다. 왜 이러한 공급망을 찾기 힘든 것일까? 본 연구는 위 문제를 해결하고자는데 목표를 두며, 이를 위해 새로운 협업기업 선정 방법론을 제시한다. 본 연구는 다음과 같이 구성된다. 첫째, 바이어의 요구조건을 수용할 능력이 있는 협업기업을 발굴하는 방법론을 제시한다. 둘째, 발굴한 협업기업 중 최적의 기업을 선정하고, 이의 민첩성을 평가하는 방법론을 제시한다. 셋째, 민첩한 공급망 운영을 위하여 비즈니스 프로세스를 동적으로 구성하는 방법론을 제시한다. 본 연구의 기여점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제조능력과 비제조능력을 체계적으로 고려한 새로운 평가 기준을 제시한다. 둘째, 민첩한 공급망 설계에 집중하여 정량적 효과 분석을 통한 객관적인 평가 지표를 제시한다. 셋째, 공학적 접근의 구체적인 운영 방법론에 기반한 방법론을 제시한다. 구체적으로, 바이어의 요구조건을 만족하는 평가 지표를 선정하고, 바이어와 협업기업간의 상호운용성 문제를 해결하기 위한 시맨틱 매칭 방법론과 시뮬레이션을 통한 평가 지표의 영향도 정량화 방법론을 제시한다. 본 연구에서 제시한 새로운 협업기업 선정 방법론은 기업이 민첩한 공급망을 설계하고 운영하는데 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.
