Interests in mixed ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) oxides have been increasing since MIECs are used as ceramic membranes or electrode materials of solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Many promising applications of ceramic membranes have also been reported for the production of pure oxygen or oxy-fuel combustion. Most SOFC cathodes are currently fabricated by using MIEC materials. The recent challenge is to design materials that have high oxygen-permeability at low temperature. In addition, oxygen membrane should show accept good mechanical and chemical stability. In order to achieve high oxygen-fluxes and high performance at low temperature, MIEC materials must contain high concentration of oxygen vacancies and have low barrier height for oxygen migration in the lattice. Among many oxygen-permeating membranes, perovskite-structured Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-? (BSCF) has been intensely studied due to its high oxygen-permeability. Recently, oxides with double-perovskite structure such as GdBaCo2O5+d have received much attention due to their high oxygen-diffusivity and low thermal-expansion coefficient (TEC) (versus BSCF). GBCO has an ordered structure with [BaO]-[CoO2]-[GdO?]-[CoO2]-[BaO] layers and oxygen vacancies are localized into [GdO?] layers with ordered patterns. The channels have weak bonding strength of oxygen ions and thus promote oxygen permeation. The good oxygen-transport properties make GBCO a promising SOFC cathode and an oxygen-permeable membrane in 600?C ~ 800&#9702en_US
C. Although GBCO is prepared and used in powder form for its use as a cathode in SOFC, dense body is needed as an oxygen-permeable membrane. It is noted that GBCO membranes often crack during sintering. Without the prevention of crack, experiment becomes very difficult. Extensive times are often wasted to find an adequate sintering condition that could avoid cracking. However the occurrence of crack was still not well understood. We have suspected that the phase transition may have been related to the surface crack. The orthorhombic super-structure was known to occur at low temperature (T<525?C) and the transition to tetragonal super-structure was observed at elevated temperature (T>525?C). It is also reported that the variation of oxygen content leads to the phase transition. In Ar atmosphere, a tetragonal phase was observed at 1100?C. To the best of our knowledge, until now, GBCO was prepared and its phase was determined only in Ar or air. More detailed study is required to determine the effect of sintering temperature and atmosphere on the phase formation since the phase change may induce the surface stress and resultant crack. Also, it is important to evaluate the phase stability and oxygen permeability of GBCO in various atmospheres. The occurrence of crack on GBCO membrane during sintering, so far, has not been specifically reported. However there is a few report that they should use very slow heating and cooling rates (1-2?C/min) or high speed sintering (microwave sintering) to avoid crack. In this study, we have studied the relation between the sintering atmosphere and the phase formation. Our goal is finding an optimum sintering-atmosphere that produces dense GBCO membranes. Relatively fast heating and cooling rates (3?C/min) were used for the test. Oxygen-permeation test was used to confirm the formation of good GBCO.en_US
