A mobile AP (MAP) is a device that shares its 3G/LTE Internet connection with other devices in the neighborhood through WiFi tethering. Due to the dramatic increase in mobile devices, this is recently highly desired to enable WiFi-only devices such as laptops and tablets to access the Internet even though there is no access point. However, existing MAPs rapidly shorten their battery lifetime as they inefficiently consume a significant portion of the total battery power for maintaining WiFi network. When WiFi tethering function is enabled, the MAP's WiFi interface always stays in a high power state even when there is no traffic at all. To save power, some devices (e.g., Window Phones) simply disable the WiFi tethering function when no traffic activity is observed for several minutes. However, this has a drawback that a user has to go back to the MAP and re-enable the tethering automatically disabled whenever the user wants to use the WiFi network again, and therefore the user may undergo inconvenience. In this dissertation, we propose two efficient power management protocols which aim to reduce energy consumption of a MAP with a negligible impact on packet delay. First, we propose a power management protocol for a MAP to increase the battery lifetime while fully supporting the current traffic load without substantial delay increase. With the proposed protocol, called sleeping mobile AP (SMAP), direct modification of WiFi kernel driver is not required at the client side. To enable power saving for a MAP, SMAP introduces a sleep cycle as in power save mode (PSM) in IEEE 802.11, but successfully keeps clients from transmitting while it sleeps. We implemented SMAP on Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphones and performed experiments on a real test-bed. Experiment results showed that SMAP can significantly increase the energy saving gain by up to 56% and 16% compared to the legacy and the current state-of-the-art solutions with a little delay hardly perceivable by users. Second, we propose another power management protocol, which aims at conserving energy without an adverse impact on downlink packet delay. In the proposed protocol, called energy efficient mobile AP (E-MAP), a MAP facilitates easy adoption and deployment using IEEE 802.11 standard while saving power. E-MAP is fully backward compatible with the IEEE 802.11 standard and it does not require any modification at the client side. We evaluated the performance of E-MAP via extensive experimental measurements in a real test-bed. Compared to existing work, E-MAP shows comparable energy saving with the current state-of-the-art solution with a negligible delay performance.en_US
