A Franck-Condon transition creates coherent nuclear wave packets in an electronic excited state, which evolve on the potential energy surface (PES) of the excited state. Amplitude of each vibrational wave packet is proportional to the square of the displacement along the vibrational coordinate. In fact, the nuclear wave packets can be created by any impulsive change of the molecular structure, where impulsive with respect to a vibration denotes a process occurring faster than the period of the vibration. Therefore, an ultrafast impulsive chemical reaction can also generate the nuclear wave packets in the PES of the product. The nuclear wave packet motions in time can be measured by various time-resolved spectroscopies such as pump/probe transient absorption (TA) and time-resolved fluorescence (TRF), and they provide information on the PES including harmonic frequencies and anharmonicities as well as the molecular structure through the vibrational spectrum. In favorable cases, molecular reaction dynamics and related reaction coordinates could also be identified. In this doctoral thesis, examples of impulsive chemical reactions and measurements of the nuclear wave packet motions in real time are presented. Specifically, excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reactions of salicylaldehyde azine (SAA) and pigment yellow 101 (P.Y.101) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of (S)-(?)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-pyrrolidinemethanol (NPP) in liquid are studied. Highly time-resolved fluorescence was used to monitor the wave packet motions, since TRF provides information on the excited electronic state exclusively. Through the wave packet motions, details of the molecular reaction dynamics as well as the reaction rates could be obtained. In chapter 2, details of the TRF and the experimental apparatus and a theory to calculate the modulation amplitudes in a TRF signal by the wave packet motions are presented. Dynamics of ESIPT and ICT have been studied by TA, because TA is simpler yet provides a high time resolution (better than 30 fs) relatively easily. However, a TA signal often gives ambiguous information, since any electronic states resonant with the probe pulse are interrogated. In contrast, a TRF signal provides information of the excited state PES exclusively, although TRF generally shows a time resolution not high enough to resolve the vibrational wave packet motions. Recently, the time resolution of a TRF experiment has been improved ~30 fs, a value high enough to resolve vibration frequencies up to 1000 cm-1. For the analyses of TRF signals, both Fourier transformation and linear prediction singular value decomposition (LPSVD) methods were employed. Experimentally determined vibrational frequencies are compared with the results of the ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations. Amplitudes of the modulations in a TRF signal are proportional to the vibrational reorganization energies (Huang-Rhys factors), which can be calculated through the normal-mode-projection method by utilizing the results from the quantum mechanical calculations. This procedure also provides the structures of the excited states and possibly the reaction dynamics and reaction coordinates. In the chapter 3, the ESIPT dynamics of SAA is studied. To investigate the rate constant and the PES, TRF was adopted to obtain the time-constants and nuclear wave packet at several wavelengths. The proton transfer occurs in 23 fs, and the vibrational peaks are presented at 130, 230 and 320 cm-1. Due to the comparison between the vibrational peak and the theoretical calculations, I conclude that the two vibrational peaks (130, 320 cm-1) and the one vibrational peak (230 cm-1) is excited by ESIPT and Franck-Condon transition, respectively, even though the 230 cm-1 peak is detected in the keto emission. Since, the shape of PES is the quasi-parabola without the energy barrier. In the chapter 4, the ESIPT dynamics of P.Y.101 is studied. TRF with a resolution higher than the periods of vibrations may render the vibrational spectrum of an emitting species by directly recording the vibrational wave packet motions in time. I applied high time-resolution TRF to the investigation of excited state dynamics of P.Y.101. TRF spectra of P.Y.101 in dichloromethane showed that upon photoexcitation of the enol isomer, a simple two-state conversion occurs in two time constants 30 and 140 fs. TRF signals were modulated due to the vibrational wave packet motions in the excited states, which provided the vibrational spectra of the emitting species. Depending on the emission wavelength, two different vibrational spectra were evident. With the help of theoretical calculations, the two spectra were assigned to the enol and keto isomers of P.Y.101 in S1 state, leading to the conclusion that P.Y.101 undergoes ultrafast ESIPT with a quantum yield close to 1. Visible-pump infrared-probe transient absorption spectra were recorded to corroborate the conclusion. In the chapter 5, ICT model of NPP is studied. The ICT model of NPP was reported as twisted ICT (TICT) model, where the nitrogen dioxide (-NO2) group rotates in 1 ps after 300 fs charge transfer. To confirm the TICT model, the 1 ps rise component should be monitored. There is no rise component except 95 fs from the TRF and TRF spectra in the acetonitrile solution. The 110 cm-1 vibrational peak for the acetonitrile solution may be generated by ICT, however, the 110 cm-1 peak and the theoretical calculations cannot convince the ICT with keeping planarity (Planar ICT, PICT). Thus, the ICT model of NPP is neither TICT nor PICT.en_US
