Maintenance of manufacturing facility is a crucial factor affecting performance, cost, and productivity of the whole manufacturing system. Efforts for minimizing downtime due to facility failure have been made since the early 1950s. Since early 21st century, ICT-based maintenance technology, mainly for preventive maintenance, has been attempted by the advanced industry. However, this method requires high investment for installing the sensors and communication infrastructure for each facility. Further, depending on the algorithm accuracy, there still exist chances of the system failure. Thus, in the industry, various maintenance strategies are employed together, but this practice brings another problem of integrality due to heterogeneous maintenance systems which support the different strategies using inconsistent data structures and terminologies.In this paper, we propose an ontology-based maintenance system (called OntoMAS) which can integrate and utilize the inconsistent information from heterogeneous systems. It can support operator to make accurate decision for error-free maintenance when periodic maintenance. Specifically, the concept and architecture of the proposed system has been studied followed by prototype implementation.
