Abstract
Radioactive cesium (Cs-137) is produced during nuclear fission reaction and poses a relatively long half-life (~30 yrs). Because cesium is similar to potassium in chemical properties, it is high soluble in water. In addition, 86% of the radioactive cesium was known to be distributed upper 2.0 cm in the soil after Fukushima Daiichi accident. Thus, various efficient adsorbents for removing cesium have been developed and the mechanism for the selective removal of cesium also have been investigated. The mechanism responsible for the selective removal of cesium is based on structural effects and ion exchange. because potassium (3.31 Å) has an ion size that is similar to that of cesium (3.29 Å), ion exchanger with potassium has been used. However, it is not easy to change the structure inside an adsorbent and the removal of cesium can be interfered by other cations (e.g., sodium and potassium) for ion exchange absorption. Thus, other adsorption mechanisms other than physical structure or ion exchange process should be required to achieve selective Cs removal. Meanwhile, metal sulfide exhibits covalent bonding properties compared to those of metal oxides. Owing to these characteristics, metal sulfide materials have been used in selective gas absorption and heavy metal removal. In this study, molybdenum sulfide, which does not have an ion exchangeable element for surface adsorption, was synthesized and tested for cesium removal in batch experiments. Because the synthesized MoS2 are amorphous and non-porous material, selective removal by structure effect was not considered. Also, the cesium removal mechanism of MoS2 was not ion exchange but surface adsorption owing to affinity with sulfide on the surface. In addition, the batch sorption test indicates that the optimal time for removing cesium is 3 h, and the oxidized MoS2 has lower Cs removal capacity (29.75 mg/g) than that of the vacuum dried sample (46.40 mg/g) although the surface area of air dried sample was larger than that of the vacuum dried one. That is, the oxidation of MoS2 and lack of sulfide decreases the cesium removal capacity. In addition, the selectivity test implies that the order of selectivity was Cs >> Sr > Cr > Ni > Fe > Mn > Co. Thus, the adsorbent can be used for the selective removal of cesium using the CORD process. Lastly, the reason why the MoS2 removes selectively cesium ion was chemical bonding between Cs+ and S with the binding energy (724.55 eV).
