Abstract
The kinetics of cementite formation from fine magnetite powder was investigated at 500?C and 600?C under 100% CO gas. Apparent reactions rate of cementite formation at each temperature were deduced by gravimetric analysis. The fractional conversion for cementite formation was measured by comparing the relative intensity of peaks from X-ray diffraction patterns of each phase in reacted sample. To confirm an existence of metallic iron phase during cementite formation, FE-SEM imaging and EDS analysis was used for carburized magnetite crystals at the same condition to magnetite powders. Cementite was formed via w?stite intermediate at 600?C, while there was no w?stite at 500?C. Both cases were well matched to shrinking unreacted-core model. There was no evidence of metallic iron intermediate at all.
