- This study examines effects of elevated seawater pCO2 and temperature on the response of natural phytoplankton in a controlled, 18-day mesocosm experiment (carbon dioxide perturbation experiments). CO2 subsequently affected the organic carbon cycling in the marine ecosystem. We designed nine scenarios of elevated pCO2 (540ppmv, 680ppmv, 710ppmv, 890ppmv, 950ppmv, 1044ppmv) and temperature (2℃ higher than ambient) using a mesocosm facility, and measured DOC and POC concentrations in the seawater. The results indicate that there was no difference in the percentage of DOC components between elevated CO2 and increasing temperature treatments. However, the C:N ratio increased from 6.8 to 9.0. Consequently, the elevated CO2 might contribute to more carbon sequestration into the deep ocean from surface water.
