- This paper investigates the design of a small axial-flow hydraulic turbine and shows how to improve the turbine performance using CFD. One dimensional design of axial-flow hydraulic turbine including runner blades, spiral casing with distributors (guide-vanes and stay-vanes), and draft tube was conducted. And the geometries were constructed by 3-D tool of SolidWorks, and 3-D computational flow analysis has been carried out using CFX-12.1. Numerical study has been carried out to enhance the turbine power output and efficiency, with various parameters including the number of blades, various blade profiles, and various stay-vane angles of the spiral casing. As a result, the power output and the efficiency of an improved hydraulic turbine with four-impellers increased 12% and 3% points respectively, compared to the initial design with five-blades turbine.
